Some drops are built around a theme. This one got built around a decade. The 1970s keep pulling focus in Collection 469, and they brought the promo tees, the ringers, and the one-night-only concert shirts with them.
Start with the shirt everyone is going to argue about. The 1980 Led Zeppelin Over Europe Tour Shirt carries the Icarus figure on the front with the tour name underneath, and a small collage print on the back. Over Europe was the last tour Zeppelin ever played. John Bonham died that September, the band folded that December, and this shirt turned into a headstone nobody intended to make. The Icarus imagery had been floating around Swan Song artwork for years, but on this one it reads differently.
Then there is the shirt with a date stamped on it. The 1976 Lynyrd Skynyrd Outlaws Crew Concert Shirt lists Skynyrd, the Outlaws, and special guest Steve Marriott's All Stars, Saturday April 17, 8pm, Civic Arena. That is Pittsburgh, eighteen months before the plane went down in Mississippi. Marriott had just come out of Humble Pie and was putting All Stars lineups together as fast as he could burn through them. Whoever pulled this shirt off the merch table that night had no idea what they were holding onto.
Two pieces in here are less about bands and more about buildings and studios. The 1970s Fillmore East Ringer Shirt is a green jersey ringer with striped trim and the venue name arced across the chest. Bill Graham's East Village room only ran from 1968 to 1971, which makes surviving merch from it about as scarce as concert cotton gets. Alongside it, the 1970s Warner Brothers Ritva Man Sweater Sweatshirt is a black and white striped knit with a stitched WB shield and Bugs Bunny holding a carrot. Ritva Man was the high end knitwear label that put artists and illustrators on sweaters in the early seventies. Studio merch made by people who thought they were making fashion.
The promo rack is deep. The 1976 Wings Over America Promo Shirt in navy with the W wings logo comes from McCartney's first full American run since the Beatles quit the road, and it pairs neatly with the 1979 Wings UK Tour Sweatshirt that closed the band's touring life out. The 1976 The Who MCA Records Promo Shirt carries an iron on style chief head in royal blue. The 1973 Foghat WB Records Promo Shirt is a grey knit with the shield on the back, exactly the kind of thing a label rep handed out at a radio station and never thought about again.
Radio gets its own artifact here. The 1970s Fantasy Park WYSP Concert Of The Mind Shirt promotes a concert that did not exist. Fantasy Park was a syndicated broadcast event, a fake festival staged entirely in sound, with a lineup built from live recordings and a crowd piped in over the top. Philadelphia's WYSP ran it in 1975. Somebody at that station printed shirts for an imaginary field full of imaginary people.
Elsewhere on the rack, the 1983 Ronnie Lane ARMS Tour Shirt documents the benefit run that put Clapton, Beck, and Page on the same stage for the first time. The 1975 Rod Stewart Faces Tour Shirt catches that band right at the end of it. The 1970s Mott The Hoople Shirt is red with the line logo, and the 1980s Hanoi Rocks Bangkok Shocks Saigon Shakes Shirt covers the Finnish band that Guns N' Roses spent a career quietly copying.
For the heavier end, the 1985 Motorhead 10th Anniversary World Tour Shirt puts the warpig over the ace of spades, and the 1989 Destruction Live Without Sense Shirt brings German thrash with full tour dates on the back. The 1991 Pop Will Eat Itself Cure For Sanity Tour Shirt goes the other direction entirely with a sampler robot skull and radiation art.
Art school shows up too. The 1980s The Show Ralph Steadman Shirt carries signed ink work from the man whose splattered line defined Hunter S. Thompson's whole world, printed by a shirt shop in Boulder. The 1970s Sims Pure Juice Skateboard Shirt is thin, tender, and faded to the point where the front print bleeds through, which is what happens when a shirt actually gets skated in.
Rounding it out: the 1990 Red Hot Chili Peppers Sleeveless Shirt with signed line art, the 1991 Grateful Dead Spring Tour Tie Dye Shirt, the 1995 Primus Penguins Shirt, and the 1980s Prince Lovesexy Shirt.
