45+ Years of Culture...Collection 459

Forty-Five + Years of American Culture

Collection 459 does not have a single mood. It has about fifteen, and that is the point.

The top of the drop is the kind of thing that reminds you why the archive matters. A 1994 Stone Temple Pilots tour shirt. A 1994 Smashing Pumpkins from the Siamese Dream era. A 1996 Smashing Pumpkins Infinite Sadness tour. A 1996 Nirvana From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. A 1992 Pearl Jam Choices shirt. The early 90s Seattle and Chicago axis shows up here in force and does not apologize for it.

Metallica runs three deep across two distinct eras. The 1989 ...And Justice for All tour, the 1994 ...And Justice for All shirt, and the 1988 Shortest Straw that is one of the more obscure single-song shirts they ever put out. The metal tier extends out from there: a 1985 Iron Maiden World Slavery tour, a 1988 Iron Maiden Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, a 1983 Iron Maiden Purgatory World Piece tour sleeveless, and a 1992 Megadeth Countdown to Extinction tour.

The piece that stops the scroll is the 1990 Digital Underground Humpty Dance shirt. Original pressing, original era, and there is not a cleaner artifact from that specific moment in Bay Area hip-hop. It sits in this collection next to a 1971 Diana Ross Motown shirt that is one of the oldest pieces WyCo has dropped in recent memory. Those two items alone tell you something about the sourcing.

The classic rock and pop tier is wide. A 1975 Rolling Stones Tour of the Americas. A 1981 Van Halen Fair Warning tour. A 1982 The Clash Combat Rock that is a legitimate grail for punk collectors. A 1978 Bob Seger Stranger in Town tour. A 1987 Tina Turner Break Every Rule World Tour. A 1989 Madonna Like a Prayer. A 1983 Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues sleeveless. A 1977 Kansas Point of Know Return from a year that band could do no wrong.

Then there is the Dale Earnhardt block, which deserves its own sentence. Thirteen shirts, multiple eras, every version of the Intimidator persona from Goodwrench to Man in Black to the 1998 Daytona 500. If you collect NASCAR, this is the drop.

The outliers are where Collection 459 gets interesting. A 1987 California Raisins Heard It Through the Grapevine. A 1994 The Crow movie shirt. A 1990s Soundgarden Bicycle Come Stand Me Up that is one of the stranger pieces in the Soundgarden catalog. A 1994 Serial Mom John Waters film shirt. A 1983 KISS World Tour. A 1995 R.E.M. Monster tour. A 1990s Stereolab that will make a very specific kind of person very happy. The range in this drop is not random. It is the archive doing what it does.
